Ummm, now whose desk could this be...? A real hive of activity, catching up on correspondence, busy, busy...

Growing up, I SO wanted Sindy's bureau, with all its mini stationery, but it was way too expensive - even secondhand (as most of my toys were). So when I found an almost complete Sindy bureau (including ottoman, notebook, pack of pencils, clipboard with loose notepaper) on ebay, well...

And then I discovered there are so many cute doll's house extras one can buy - like flowers, books, parcels, scissors, sewing threads, strawberries, wine...

Sindy's having THE best time!

Sadly, my mother threw away all my toys (when she decided I'd outgrown them), so I've sourced all the above from ebay, grabbing great bargains as everything is a tad 'damaged'.
The wardrobe is discoloured from being in sunlight, but it has all the internal bits AND the original box (albeit very battered).
The bed is missing a leg (you may espy it's sitting on a bit of wood), but it came with the bedding, including the mattress, and all in good clean condition. (I really wanted original 1960s bedding - loose sheets, blanket, white counterpane - but the 1980s beds were much cheaper, and a duvet is easier to handle one-handed.)
And Sindy herself...
She is just like my childhood original, complete with bad haircut (my Sindy was secondhand and her previous owner had cut her hair). I had to buy this particular one, because she has a gammy right leg, like me, that doesn't bend, and I've made her a lefty, like me (post-stroke). But she has the pretty face of the 1960s/70s Sindys, and I think she looks a bit Marilyn Munroe in this picture :)

Apparently, there was a Marilyn Sindy issued in 1967, so she may be one of those, as may my childhood Sindy.

As I work through the book I showed last week, I'm unearthing memories, and pondering what they mean to me today... There seems to be something significant, almost redemptive, in this present-day Sindy play. I can't exactly put it into words, but I feel part of me is healing... and for that I am deeply grateful.

  10. Great post. I remember my best Christmas present ever was a Sindy type doll with a full set of knitted and hand made clothes (made by my mum) in a vanity case. This post brought back memories. Thanks. Sarah #23

  11. This brings back memories, no idea what happened to mine. When I went to college (many miles from home) I thought I would come back to these things including my favourite collection of Trolls (don't know if you remember them) but no sign of any of them! When I asked my mum what had happened to them she replied "They've left home". I never knew where they went to and have not received any postcards Lol! Have a good woyww and happy crafty week, Angela x12x

  12. Lovely that you're getting in touch with your childhood self! I felt that way when I started buying toys for my son when he was little. It was so magical to be able to play with building blogs and playdough once again! In a way, I feel sad that he has now outgrown those toys. Hope you have a lovely week! zsuzsa #17

  16. How nice that you can go back and relive childhood memories! I had Barbie and Ken, just one of each, the house, the wardrobe, and the corvette (hmmm-maybe that's why I've always wanted a corvette?) I tried to share the Barbie experience with DD, but nope - she was into strong and powerful female action figures like Shira! Not complaining though, she turned out to be a strong and independent woman! Thanks for sharing, Lindart #31

  18. I love dolls, too. Although I just recently cleared out the majority of them. I will be keeping my faves though. Your Cindy is lovely. And I think all of her desk accessories are adorable.

  20. This took me back quite a few years - my younger sister had a full three storey Cindy house with all the furniture, working cooker, etc. I think it is still in our roof space at my Mum's house but as she has two boys, I'm sure they won't want it to be passed on!!

  22. Ooh this took me back too - I think I had a Sindy and a Tressy (Tressy had brown hair). When my daughter was little Barbie was having a retro moment and lots of her friends had Barbies - she didn't want one because "when I grow up I want to look like my mummy not Barbie"...
